So, the Oscars are on Sunday. The nominations are here. So, what are your thoughts on the “big” ones (Best Actor / Best Actress / Best Movie / Best Supporting Actor / Best Supporting Actress). Are there other awards you watch closely (like Documentary, Song, etc?)
Who will win? Who should win, but won’t?
My thoughts in a few….

I’ve seen exactly two of the nominated films, both of them documentaries: “Man on Wire” and “Trouble the Water.” Both gave me nightmares; “Man on Wire” kept me up for a week after I saw it — but it also made me hungry for a larger, more obsessive life and convinced me one should do what s/he loves regardless of the cost. “Trouble the Water” reminded me that human life is fragile and precious, and convinced me that bureaucratic government of any stripe will never be my friend.
The Academy Awards? A too-expensive, incestuous night of Hollywood patting itself on the back? Like reality television, it will most likely be the talk of the water cooler for a day or two after it’s over, but I won’t participate because I won’t be watching. Not that I resent those who do. I’m just not that interested — even though it will be interesting to see how accurate Nate Silver’s predictions were.
I actually have the TV turned off. There is entirely too much of it everywhere, though I had thought I could stomach watching it.
Of the Best Picture films, I was able to see Frost/Nixon and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I’ve seen a couple of the other films that have nominees in the Actor/Actress category, such as Rachel Getting Married, Vicki Christina Barcelona, and the Dark Knight.
The only award I’m sure of is that Heath Ledger will win Best Supporting Actor.
I am not much of a documentary person, however, I did see Trouble the Water after meeting Carl Deal and his wife Kim on a flight on their way home from Sundance.
I’ll watch the results via Twitter and CNN online…
I didn’t watch the Oscars, I rarely do because I can’t invest that much of my life in television. Was it really four hours long? And besides, this year I would’ve spent the entire time screaming at the screen “DOUBT! Every prize should go to DOUBT or MAN ON WIRE.”
I did see one award (which neither actress from DOUBT won)-Best Supporting Actress-and was once again blown away by the presenter Tilda Swinton. I think she is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. The kind of beauty that makes me wonder why in the world anyone would be attracted to Sarah Jessica Parker and the breasts from hell. (Did you see those things popping out of that dress?)
Tilda could teach SJP a thing or two.
My daughter called me into the living room when Sarah Jessica Parker was onstage. She looked like she stole Glenda the Good Witch’s Dress.
